MEET THE TEAM: Lisa Talocchino, Zambezi Crescent Reservations Manager

Why, in your opinion, is The Falls a must-see? You can simply not explain the feeling that overcomes you when you stand in front of the magnificent Victoria Falls. The scale of it, the vast amounts of water flowing over into the gorge and the thundering sound that it produces – combined with the beauty of the Rain Forest – makes for an unforgettable experience. Viewing the Falls from the Zimbabwean side is undoubtedly going to give you the best views of the Main Falls. There are also many other viewing points along the way, wherefrom you can view the gorge as well as the “boiling pot”.

What is the best experience at the Lodge?  The Sunset Cruise: sipping on your favourite drink at sunset while enjoying animal sightings – all from a luxury boat – rates very high on my list of best experiences at the Lodge. The Sunset Cruise departs from the Lodge at around 16h00 or 16h30, depending on the season. The duration of the cruise is about 2 hours. The Zambezi River hosts a diverse array of animal and bird life. You can expect to see river-dwellers like crocodiles and hippos as well as buck, elephant, zebra, giraffe and big cats on the banks of the River. Knowledgeable guides are always ready to answer questions as well as assist guests with their perfect photo opportunities. A stay at the Lodge includes two game activities per day – either a morning or afternoon game drive or sunrise or sunset boat cruise. Snacks and drinks are also included on the game drives or boat cruises.

What is the best experience outside of the Lodge? Other than the must-do Victoria Falls trip on foot, I would also recommend seeing the Falls from the air. Victoria Falls River Lodge’s activity desk can assist with booking either a 13-minute or 26-minute helicopter flight over the Falls (this is an optional extra). The helicopter will take you for a gently looping figure-eight flight over the Falls, or – on the longer flight option – up along the Zambezi River and scenic areas of the Zambezi National Park. It is a great way to see just how tremendously big the Falls are, and it also offers spectacular views of the gorge. If you enjoy taking photos as much as I do, then a helicopter flight will provide you with ample opportunity to snap that perfect picture.

What item is a must-have to take with on your trip to the Lodge? A swimming costume. All the Luxury Tented Suites and Island Treehouse Suites have private plunge pools on their decks. Therefore, game-viewing from your pool with your favourite cocktail is a must.

Favourite memory of your trip(s)? It was during a game drive, being surrounded by a herd of buffalo on one of our last nights. I have never seen such a huge herd of buffalo and being so close to the animals really made my trip special.

“Book 3 to 4 nights at Victoria Falls River Lodge – it’s really the ideal setting for total relaxation and exploration. It is situated away from the hustle and bustle of Victoria Falls Town, and you can do a day trip to Zambia and Botswana and return to the tranquility of the Zambezi National Park (Zimbabwe) in the afternoon.” –Lisa’s Expert Advice for first-time visitors to the Lodge

Favourite meal at Victoria Falls River Lodge? I enjoyed the Springbok shank. It was perfectly tender.
Favourite drink at the Lodge? Gin and tonic, particularly on the game drive.
What is a must-buy curio item? Earrings. The local artists make the most beautiful carved and beaded earrings.
What clothing do you recommend guests to never go without? Comfortable walking shoes. The Rain Forest walk (to view the Falls), as well as a walk around town and local markets, will be far more enjoyable if one’s feet are comfortable.
